THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL
Updated: Apr 30, 2020
A lot of people are feeling uneasy right now.
We have never experienced anything like this.
There’s been a drastic change to how we live day to day, relate to each other, work and parent.
And our instinct is to shame and blame others.
But our new circumstances and other people aren’t causing us to feel stressed and anxious.
We’re feeling this way because there are a lot of things that are uncertain and beyond our control.
But the truth is, this has been the case all along. We have never been in control of our circumstances.
Life is full of change. Drastic change may happen at any time. Losing your job or catching a debilitating virus is always a possibility.
COVID-19 has forced us all to become aware and come to terms with the reality of being human:
Life is unpredictable.
We are immortal.
And we are interdependent.
Once we embrace and accept our lack of control and stop resisting it, we become unstuck and evolve.
We stop living in fear and start living in love.
We stop defining our value and happiness based on anything external like our job or our money and start to see that we are worthy just for existing.
We stop living on autopilot and become conscious that life is impermanent and can only be lived in the present moment.
So, use this opportunity to become more conscious and deliberate with how you want to feel and show up in life. This is the only thing you can control in this uncertain life.
Work with a therapist or life coach to learn to manage your mind and do the deeper work in real time while you’re in it so you come away empowered and feel peace no matter what life throws at you now and in the future.
It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it because on the other side is so much mental and emotional freedom, which is what we’re all really after.
