THE MENTAL LOAD OF LIFE



A lot of women struggle with the mental load being a mother, partner, employee, friend and all the mental and emotional energy those roles entail.


Endless mental to-do lists, worrying, thinking and planning.


Not to mention the regret about the past and worry about the future.


I think it's common in our culture to wear this mental load as a badge of honor. We think that feeling things like guilt and overwhelm is normal and means that we are doing a good job as mothers, for example.


But, negative feelings don’t fuel us to take positive action and create what we want in life. They feel awful and we end up showing up in ways that we’re not proud of.


I’ve been there and it feels terrible.


I used to think that I would never have the freedom of my mind ever again.


Until I learned to manage my mind.


I learned that the mental load of motherhood or anything else in life isn’t something that just happens to you.


It also has nothing to do with anything external to you, not your partner or your circumstances or your past.


Stress, overwhelm, guilt and worry are emotions that are caused by the thoughts you think and your interpretations you have about your life, children and to-do lists.


And they are optional.


You always get to decide how to think and feel.


You get to decide if you have to do everything, all at once, perfectly or to do what's reasonable and feels right for you and your family.


You get to decide whether to make your lack of support mean that you have to sacrifice yourself or that you don’t and ask for help or find creative ways of getting support, without making it mean anything negative.


You get to decide whether to compare your parenting to others and come up lacking or find all the ways in which you are a great parent and feel amazing.


Releasing your mental load starts by becoming aware of the thoughts that are causing you to feel stressed and overwhelmed.


It’s from this place that you can intentionally create a life that you love, regardless of your social conditioning or the examples that you see in the world.
